Top 3 Tips for Business Owners

Written by Jennifer Jurgens | Oct 2, 2019 8:30:31 PM

After being in business for just over a year now, 1 Bold Step's CEO and Founder, Jennifer Jurgens, sat down with the Small Business Association of Michigan to provide her own Wednesday Wisdom and talk about her top three tips for other business owners.

Tip #1: Be the Aspirin

"My favorite tip for business owners is to always be the aspirin and not the headache when you're dealing with your clients," Jennifer stated. It's important to make sure that the advice or the solution that you're providing to your client doesn't add to their problems. When acting as the aspirin, you are ensuring that you always try to make things easier on your clients, rather than just adding to their headache.

Tip #2: Establish a 'Disney Drawer'

Jennifer suggested that if you haven't heard about the relationship between Walt and Roy Disney, that you should look it up. Walt always had the ideas while Roy was always the one to execute Walt's ideas.

"As a small business owner, you probably have a thousand ideas that you want to do, but you can't possibly do them all." Jennifer stated. "Don't lose your ideas. Stuff them in the 'Disney Drawer' and go back to them when you do your quarterly and annual planning. But don't let them pull you off track of your original focus and your business plan."

Tip #3: Hire People Who are Smarter Than You.

For Jennifer's last tip to other business owners she concluded with "Hire people who are smarter than you." She went on to say, "Don't be afraid to ask to outsource. Don't be afraid to look for consultants who are stronger in certain areas. As a business owner you're going to be tempted to try to do it all and you can't." As your business grows, it's impossible to know everything there is to know. Relying on others who have a different skill set than yourself becomes a key part in growing your business.
